Topic: Case Study

Order Description

Read all the cases (at the end of chapters 1-6). Do not try to use them as

illustrations of each of the chapter’s theoretical concepts. Just read them as

if they are short stories, and note you thoughts and feelings as you are

reading them. Try to identify both your initial reactions and some of the

underlying values, assumptions, beliefs and expectations you have, which

affect how you interpret the behaviors of people in the cases, and how you

assign motives to the characters.

DO NOT answer the Case Questions at the end of each case.

In a short essay answer the following questions, with specific examples:

1. What are the value judgments and assumptions of the authors of the cases?

2. Which perceptual biases are they using?

3. Do you think they are consciously using these assumptions and biases to make their point(s)? Why or why not?

4. How can you determine the difference between “facts” and exaggerations in the
cases in this book? Give at least three examples.

While there are clear theoretical identifiers, the focus of this assignment is to have you recognize and train your intuition. The theory will be used to help explain

the identifiers, but focus on what you are thinking and feeling as you
read the cases, first. Then you can start linking to theory.
