The World the Text of Creates [The meanings & interpretations (hermeneutics)

that were intended by – or have been given to – the pericope) [1000 words]

First:

Briefly look over Formal Paper #2 to refresh your memory about the general background

ofyour chosen biblical book.

Second:

Briefly look over Formal Paper #3 to refresh your memory about the literary and exegetical

investigations you made about your chosen passage.

Third:

See if Gilbert [or Kesich if your passage is from the Gospels) have anything to say about the

interpretation style of your chosen pericope. You may use that info if it is relevant.

Then:

Obtain at least two biblical commentaries [you might do well to obtain a third) that provide

a hermeneutical interpretation ofyour selected pericope. The entire pericope, not just the

verses you chose to do exegesis on. Read through [and take notes on) the hermeneutical

discussion ofyour entire pericope in each book. (Note, you can also include info on your
selected verses, as part of the overall pericope.)

You are now ready to write your paper. What do your two [or three) biblical scholars have

to say about the meanings or interpretations or applications of your chosen passage?

For this paper you are to provide at least two dififerent ways of interpreting your pericope.

You can make a contrast between ancient and modern interpretations.

Or you can give two differing traditional [ancient rabbinic or patristic) interpretations
[i.e., compare the literal, historical face-value take on the text as well as an
allegorical or metaphorical take on the text).

0 Or you might choose to contrast a ]ewish interpretation with a Christian interpretation.

Be sure that you substantiate your work with citations, quotes and sound bites from the

biblical scholars you use. [An average of4-6footnotes per page should be good.)

Plan to provide an Introduction paragraph for this paper. It does NOT need to be a thesis

paragraph. Be sure you write that paragraph after your research. The Introduction

paragraph and each of the two (or three) Hermeneutical Interpretations must be set
apart with bold sub-headings.
