Writing Assignment, due the last day of class: The Research Paper.
Minimum Requirements for the Research Paper: 2-3 pages of text, 3 sources.
Manuscript Conventions for Research Paper: MLA Format, Rules for Writers chapter 60. This section, 60b, provides a model research paper in the MLA style.
Be sure to consult the model research paper: Rules for Writers, chapter 60b, pp.527-532.
If you have not yet selected a topic for the Research Paper, do so now. The topic is to be selected from an article in a current edition of The Washington Post newspaper. Choose an article
that is of interest to you and use the subject of that article as your research topic.
Collect additional sources of information (both print and electronic sources are acceptable) and use these sources to develop a short documented paper of 2-3 pages in length. Follow the MLA
style as described in Rules for Writers, Chapter 60, and be sure to include textual citations (parenthetical citations) and a list of Works Cited in your paper. Refer to the model research paper,
pp. 527-532 as a final check on your own work.
A note on grading: The Research Paper will be graded for three equal elements: the text of the paper itself (grammar and composition) the use of citations (including parenthetical citations)
and the Works Cited page. These three items will be weighted equally and will be graded in terms of how well they conform to MLA style. Refer to the handbook and to the MLA Web Site for this
information and especially to the sample MLA research paper available in the Handbook.
