The Main Event. By Catherine A. Hoffman & Andrew J. Hoffman
The opening sentence must provide some background for the thesis statement, which appears at the end of the first paragraph. Allude to a study that corroborates the need for research on the topic. The thesis is the main point that you will make and substantiate through documentation. Limit paper to defending the thesis. You are required to prove or disprove one statement by an author by documenting what others have said about it. Your references must come from three different types of sources; one quote from three of the following: a book, a magazine, a newspaper article, journal, interview, film, and the web. Do not use the terms "I agree" or "I disagree."
Each body paragraph should begin with a clearly stated topic sentence, previously mentioned in the introductory paragraph. You may use not only views of critics who support your argument, but also views of other writers who present opposite points of view. Use transitional words and phrases to introduce your verifying data so that your logic will flow smoothly and not appear disjointed. Give credit where credit is due to your supporting authors and your adversaries. Do not plagiarize. You must write a minimum of three typewritten pages plus a Works Cited page.
