the last page of every YA novel should say not ‘the end’ but ‘the beginning
YA author Richard Peck once said that “the last page of every YA novel should say not ‘the end’ but ‘the beginning’.” Pick two novels (one can be from your own personal reading and one from syllabus or both from syllabus) and demonstrate Peck’s claim through you examples. In other words, Peck’s thoughts constitute a thesis statement (whether you agree or not) and I am asking you to support this thesis with evidence from the texts. That evidence will take the form of analysis and likely some quoting. If you feel strongly that Peck got it wrong, you may also take the position of arguing with him in your paper and present that. Otherwise, tell me what he means and where you find examples of his thoughts.
Papers need the following:
A title
Bibliography with correct citations
A clear position stated in opening sentence
Correct in text citations (no dropped quotations)
With regard to #3, I want you already in the first sentence to state your claim, the position you will be taking with regard to your two novel examples. What does this look like? Your first sentence could look something like this. “In novels X and Y, the authors demonstrate Peck’s idea of the end as beginning through ….” Though it may read as clunky, this is what I want. Please send first sentence drafts so I can intervene quickly if need be.
Do not write a flowery introduction about the state of YA literature. Do not write excessively in first person and do not summarize plot.
