The Great Gatsby Essay Prompts

The Great Gatsby Essay Prompts
Essay Guidelines: Your essay should be argumentative and analytical; that is, your thesis should state something that can be argued against, and your thesis should be supported in the body paragraphs by premises that include specific examples that you will analyze to justify your thesis. Essay submissions that are mainly summary and opinion (without supporting analysis) will receive poor grades. Your grade will be based largely on the quality of your argument and how well you support it. For an essay to earn an ?A? grade, it must feature a clearly written, argumentative thesis, solid analysis in the body paragraphs that is based on concrete evidence from the novel, and excellent command of written language, which includes proper grammar and spelling. Your essay should be 3-5 pages, but no fewer than 3 full pages. Use MLA citation; I will not expect a woks cited page if the only work being cited is The Great Gatsby, but I will expect parenthetical notation for quotations from the novel. Use 12-point font and normal margins. Please double space your essay. As noted in the syllabus.

Prompts:
In the last chapter, Fitzgerald describes Tom and Daisy in this way: ?They were careless people, Tom and Daisy?they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together and let other people clean up the mess they had made.? Use this quotation as a starting point for making an argument about the kind of people Tom and Daisy truly are. Demonstrate whether you believe this is an accurate description of them by analyzing this quotation within the context of their actions and choices provided by Fitzgerald?s story.
