Assignment:
This unit will introduce the class to both evaluation and ethical arguments. Evaluation arguments are similar to definition arguments in that they utilize the same criteria match structure. The difference is that the point of an evaluation argument is to answer the question “Is this thing a good member of its class” (RBJ 286).
• One of the examples from the textbook is to determine the criteria for a “good used car for college students.”
In this unit, we will focus on ethical arguments, which seek to answer the question “Is this action right (wrong)” (286).
• An example from the text is “Was it right or wrong to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II?” (286).
Ethical arguments do not employ the criteria match structures of definition and evaluation arguments. Instead, there are two strategies for ethical arguments: Principles-based and Consequences-based.
Topic:
For this unit, we will be reading and writing on whether or not it is ethical to raise the minimum wage. We will read a number of different perspectives on this issue analyzing them for both information on the debate over minimum wage as well as how to make ethical arguments. What we read in class will introduce us to many of the aspects of the debate over the minimum wage, but as with the previous unit, some outside research will still be necessary for your essays.
Audience:
For this assignment you will imagine an audience that is made up of your peers in this class. You must then decide whether or not that audience will share assumptions about the minimum wage and how much you will need to defend your principles or consequences based argument. You will also need to consider what the audience already knows about the topic, and what you need to explain to them. Paying attention to and contributing to class discussion will help you answer these questions.
Alternative:
While the unit will be focused on defining what a college education is, you may write on any topic of your choosing. If you do so you will be required to do additional outside research for the essay. Also, you must clear the topic with me by meeting with me during office hours. The essay must still meet all of the assignment’s criteria.
Criteria:
Though your assignment topic is open, you will be required to meet specific criteria that should be present in your essay. Your paper will:
• Contain an enthymeme
• Offer reasonable support for that claim based on research.
• Incorporate the Toulmin strategy of argumentation. Your argument must have identifiable enthymemes (claims and reasons), warrants, backing, and grounds.
• Use principles or consequences based ethical argument.
• Be 4-6 pages in length.
• Convey a trustworthy tone.
• Appeal to the values of a particular audience. In this case, your fellow classmates.
• Be typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12-point font with 1” margins.
• MLA Format, including a Work Cited page
