Tell a story of significance to your family
Project description
You will be writing a narrative essay that incorporates what you have learned about both narration and description. The topic is given below. Be aware that this assignment requires that you incorporate dialog into your text; therefore, make sure you read the guidelines for incorporating dialog into your text in the document following this one in this folder, Writer’s Workshop 1. Doing so incorrectly will seriously hurt the portion of your grade connected to grammar in the grading rubric. You assignment should be at least 500 words in length.
You have the option of receiving and providing feedback on the essay to your peers in the discussion forum titled Family Story Rough Drafts. You may ask a question about a specific section of your paper or post the entire paper for feedback. This is optional but can be very helpful.
IMPORTANT: Remember to submit your essay through Criterion first and to make corrections suggested there. Then, copy and paste your paper and submit it to the Turn-It-In drop box adhering to MLA style format (see the template in the Getting Started Folder) and in this folder (Writer’s Workshop 1) as well.
Read the material on the writing process from the University of North Carlina’s Chapel Hill to help you get started with your work. Here is the assignment:
Essay Assignment:
Tell a story of significance to your family. It could be a story you witnessed or one that was told to you. Do not state the story’s significance. It must emerge from the details or actions narrated.
Tell the story as it comes to you, but tell it IN SCENE, moment to moment. It could be a memory or a story about when you were a child or a story told about a relative or sibling or a parent.
Remember to include:
1. setting/ location,
2. time of day,
3. year,
4. season,
5. gestures (people sit, stand, move),
6. dialogue (one line per speaker, tags ‘he/she said’),
7. consistent tense—use past or present but be consistent
Compare the two passages below. Passage B is written in scene. Notice how the gestures and dialog of the people involved reveal the significance of the event. Notice too that it has a specific setting, time, place (the kitchen, New Year’s Eve, people present). Structure your story like this. You may want to go back to the list of narration tips and to the mp3 file to review the qualities of a good narrative piece.
Passage A:
I remember when my sister announced she was getting married. It was New Year’s Eve in 2004. She was very young and our family was concerned. My mother cried and my father got upset.
Passage B:
My sister Katya walked in the kitchen, where we’d gathered – Mom, Dad, Tio Alberto and his second wife– to bring in the New Year. Mom had handed out the champagne glasses. Katya said, “I’m getting married.” It was 2004. She was sixteen.
Tio Alberto, who was already drunk, raised his empty champagne glass to her. Dad held his close to his chest. “Sure, my love,” he said. “You’re getting married. Some day.”
