Critical thinking: Sum up your Learning on Democracy, (In)Equality, Social Justice, and Oppression/Transformation in Latin America since 2000.
On no more than TWO sides of a page, single-spaced (minimum 11’ font), answer the following questions, numbering them as you go. You must be concise, synthesizing your thoughts. If you go too long, you must edit/cut your length! Nothing on any additional pages will be graded.
Use empirical evidence to support your answer, such as data, or quotes or citations from the experts. Be sure to use parenthetical citations in the text from your sources, and include your works cited (on an extra page if necessary).
1) What do you see as the one most positive, important advance toward democracy in Latin America since 2003? By contrast, what is the current greatest remaining obstacle to democratic politics (for the region, or one or more countries). Make an argument for why these are the most important factors (+) and (-). Use data from case study examples to illustrate your points.
2) In what ways have Indigenous and Afro-descended people, and/or Latin American women attained greater equality over the last two decades? In what ways do inequalities persist? Use data and/or real-life examples from the country cases you have researched and learned about this semester.
3) Economics have generally improved in the Latin American region since the year 2000. But on average, about 50% of Latin Americans still live in poverty. What economic policy(ies) (in place, or on the agenda, or needing to be) do you think has or could increase social justice for that 50% still struggling to make ends meet? What leaders are implementing these policies that have or are successfully reducing poverty?
4) Make an argument showing that Freire’s pedagogy of the oppressed has been broken and transformation has taken/is taking root between certain leaders and/or political groups; OR to the contrary, provide an example of groups who are following the age-old patterns of oppressing others once they gain power.
