state correctional facility
Paper instructions:
Part one:
As of 2014, 32 states out of 50 and the federal government have a death penalty option. Select and research a state on the internet that has a death penalty law
and find out the specifics about that state. For example, what methods are used to carry out death sentences in that particular state; lethal injection, firing squad,
gas or what? Are the accused given options or who decides on the method? Who makes the final decision regarding a death sentence, the judge or jury? What year was the
last time the state actually carried out the death penalty, as some states have it on the books but do not utilize it. This information varies by state, so look for
specific information. Let’s discuss a variety of states.
Part Two:
A new state correctional facility is being proposed to be built in your community—a maximum-security facility holding 800 inmates. Because you are a student in the
Foundations of Corrections course, you are considered an expert in the field and have been asked to sit on the Community Board to make the decision of where to break
ground. The state funding has already been earmarked and promised to your community, as soon as you come to an agreement regarding where the facility will be built.
However, the funds are limited and the money needs to be spent wisely. The new construction will bring in 1000 jobs and boost the economy in the area.
The location is yet to be determined, however there are three locations being considered. The three locations are: (1) Across a state highway from the local high
school because the land is less expensive compared to the other locations, undesirable for other construction, and already has public roads, public access, and public
utilities in place; (2) ten miles out of town in a desolate area with no public roads or public utilities yet in place; or (3) downtown next to the court house and
municipal building which would reduce state costs with transportation of convicted offenders and provide easy access to parole officers and attorneys who interact with
the inmates. How would you feel about a state correctional facility in your own community? As part of the Board, what kind of questions would you ask, how would you
vote and how would you sway those on the Board to see it your way—the right way? Use sources from our readings or the Internet to back up your ideas.
