Assignment #1.1 – All About You
Learning Objectives: (1) Become familiar with basic navigation in Blackboard, and learn how to make a
post using Blackboard’s discussion forum feature. (2) Familiarize yourself with the career aspirations of
your classmates.
Points possible: 1
For this assignment, you will provide some information about yourself so that we can get to know you.
You’ll do this by posting to a discussion form that I have provided for this purpose. You can enter the
form by clicking on the “Discussions” link in the menu on the left. Once inside the discussion section,
click on the forum named “All About You!” and add your entry by clicking on “Create Thread.” As you
can see, I’ve labeled my post “Everything you need to know about me …” Complete your post by
answering the questions below.
Once the text editor appears, please answer the following six questions:
1. Talk a little bit about your biography. Where are you from? What kinds of things do you do for
fun? What is it about you that others find noteworthy? Etc.
2. What was the decision making process that led you to major in sociology? What specific
events got you thinking about majoring in sociology? What finally caused you to take the
plunge?
3. How did your parents or friends react when you told them you were going to major in
sociology?
4. What, specifically, interests you about sociology? What kinds of things are you interested in
studying? Why does this interest you?
5. Name something that you’ve learned in one of your sociology classes that has changed the
way you look at the world, or something that surprised you, or something that inspired you, or
something that you’ll never forget. (Or all of the above . . .)
6. What do you plan to do with your degree?
You can compose your answer in a word processor and paste it into the discussion board if this is easier
for you.
Try to answer all parts of all questions, and take some time to give your fellow classmates a sense of
who you are, why you are studying sociology, and what kind of things you hope to be doing after
college. THEN, AFTER YOU’VE POSTED YOUR ANSWER TO THESE QUESTIONS . . . I want you to come back
to the discussion forum in a few days or hours and make some comments on your classmates’ posts. Did
you go to the same high school? Do you both have the same favorite professor? Do you both want to go
to grad school? Would you like someone to elaborate on something they said? In a few weeks the
workload in this class is going to intensify. When it does, you might be better off if you’ve managed to
make some friends that you can email or call for help. Building a sense of community now could very
well save you later on. In order to get credit for this assignment, you need to reply to at least two posts
made by other class members. Try commenting on posts that have no replies before adding to threads
that already have comments.
Assignment summary: Answer the six questions above in a discussion forum post, and take some time
to comment on what your classmates have said.
Grading rubric:
There is no rubric for this assignment. If you name is on the discussion forum post, you’ve answered the
questions, and you’ve made some good comments on at least two of your classmates’ posts, you get
credit for doing it.
Assignment #1.2 – Jobs in Sociology
Learning Objective: (1) Learn about the recent sociology job market, and think about what you can do
with a sociology major. (2) Learn how to use Blackboard’s discussion forums. Forge some social network
ties with other classmates.
Points possible: 1
Presumably, you are a sociology major because you want a job in this field. The American Sociological
Association has done a major survey on the activities of recent sociology graduates, and you can read
two articles on this survey in the course documents section of Blackboard under the heading,
“Documents for Assignment #1.2 – Jobs in Sociology.” Please read these documents carefully. You
should also check out the UNF Career Services Guide to careers in sociology. It lists a number of job
titles that sociology majors often acquire, as well as useful links. Finally, please watch the video lecture
“Video for Assignment #1.2 – Jobs in Sociology.” This video will give you a little information about the
history of sociology as a profession, and the state of the job market for sociology graduates. It is in
QuickTime format (.mov) and you may need to download it in order to see it clearly. (It is about 77 mb.)
Once you are acquainted with this material, enter the “Discussions” section of the class Blackboard site,
and click on the discussion board labeled “Assignment #1.2 – Jobs in Sociology.” Once you’ve entered
this discussion board, I want you to write a post outlining your impressions of the job market for new
sociologists. What were your impressions as you read through the assigned documents? Once you’ve
discussed the job market, please tell us what your dream job would be, and give us a paragraph
outlining why you’d like this job.
Finally, just as in the previous assignment, I want you to read everyone else’s answer, and make one
substantive reply to at least one other student.
Grading rubric:
Here’s what you need to do to get your point for this assignment:
Provide a comment about careers or jobs in sociology that makes some sort of connection or
reference to the assigned readings.
Make a substantive, intelligent, well-reasoned response to a classmate in the forum, OR ask a
question that might be used for further discussion. Try commenting on posts that have no
replies before adding to threads that already have comments.
Assignment #1.3 – ASA Style, and Sociological Journals
Learning Objectives: Learn how to find articles in sociology journals, and learn how to cite papers and
construct a bibliography in ASA format.
Points possible: 6
Here’s where the work begins! This class is primarily about how sociologists produce knowledge. Many
of your classes thus far have focused on what we as sociologists know. This class is about how we know
what we know. The principal means that sociologists have for disseminating the knowledge that they
produce is through scholarly journals. There are many scholarly journals that publish sociological
research. Many of these are housed in UNF’s library, and most are accessible through UNF’s eJournal
locator. You can read about the characteristics of scholarly journals in this essay written by a UNF
librarian:
Analyzing Scholarly Journals
Knowledge in sociology journals is subjected to peer review. You can read about peer review on page 30
of your textbook. You can also read about scholarly peer review in this section of a Wikipedia article on
the subject. Finally, you can examine this guide this guide to peer review written by a UNF librarian.
When scholars refer to peer reviewed articles published in scholarly journals, they use particular citation
formats that allow other researchers to find the sources they are using. There are many different
strategies for citing sources. Generally, sociologists use some form of what is called “ASA Style”—the
citation strategy published by the American Sociological Association. We will be using ASA Style in the
papers we write in this class. There are many online guides for how to use ASA style, including how to
format a bibliography. Some excellent guides are here:
Purdue Guide to ASA Formatting – This site is maintained by the Purdue University library, and
has examples of how to cite books and articles in ASA style. It also demonstrates how to format
a bibliography.
William Paterson Guide to ASA Style – A concise resource for how to cite sources and construct
a bibliography maintained by the library at William Paterson University.
I have also included a link in the folder for Unit One to a document entitled Quick Tips for ASA Style. It
can serve as a ready reference for how to document different types of sources.
OK. HERE WE GO … Once you know what a scholarly journal is, and once you’ve mastered ASA style,
then you’re ready to start the library assignment! Your job is to find three articles in a scholarly journal
with “sociology” or “sociological” as part of the journal’s title. (Not necessarily the article’s title.) I want
you to find:
An article that deals with some aspect of religion
An article about some aspect of race or ethnicity
An article about education
The articles that you find must be in a journal that is published in the United States, or by a scholarly
organization in the United States. The articles you find must have been published since 2010. No ancient
papers allowed!
You can get help finding your journal articles in the UNF library by examining the various guides to
research that our librarians have written. The eJournal locator is available from the library’s home page.
To make things easier, you may need to log in to the library with your N number. To make things extra
easy on you, a list of sociology journals (many with the required words in the title) is available right here.
Once you find these three articles, write down their full bibliographic citation in ASA style, and turn it in
using the Blackboard assignment link in the folder for Unit One. Assignments can be pasted in the text
editor, or attached in Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format. No exotic file formats please!
Assignment summary: Find three articles in sociology journals (one on religion, one on race or ethnicity,
and one on education) and submit the full, correct ASA citation for each.
Grading rubric:
The table is used once for each of the three articles you find
