1. Racism and prejudice are encountered in our society in a number of different ways. Using examples from the PBS documentary we watched, A Class Divided (Eye of the Storm), describe how the teacher (and the students) created and reinforced prejudice and discrimination. What were some of the consequences for the children and adults? While we generally think of racism or discrimination as between individuals, there is also institutional racism. What is institutional racism? How might these examples of individual discrimination or prejudice become institutional racism? Please describe in detail 4 ways racism is built into social institutions.

3. Gender inequality and stratification comes in many forms. Using examples from the films, readings, and lectures, describe how gender inequality is perpetuated in 3 different social institutions. What is patriarchy’s role in perpetuating gender inequality? How does patriarchy limit both men and women? What are some ways that gender inequality and/or patriarchy can be combatted on both an institutional and personal way? Use examples from the films readings and lectures.

(IMPORTANT) What you need to check while writing the answers:

1. Be sure and integrate the readings including examples from the text and readers. This is where people had the most difficulty. When I state in the exam question to integrate the readings I mean this. You WILL NOT get full credit without integrating the readings, film, and lectures.

2. Be sure and read the entire question carefully. While I know there may be some misunderstandings with questions, there were a number of answers that did not answer the question fully or as it was asked. Please make sure you take the time to fully read the question and answer it correctly!

3. Fully answering all parts of the question by DOING ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS ABOVE!
