Social Identity Matrix
The Social Location Paper should be 3 pages. Keep in mind this paper is you sharing with me how you have explored your own experiences using the a select number
of the class readings up to this point to show me your critical analysis.
The key for this paper is that you use the class reading to explore your experiences. Use the concepts (like the cycle of socialization) and walk me through your
experiences. It should be more than a “this is who I am” paper. It needs to show me you are thinking critically about the class materials.
This paper will be the result of combining your impressions of class materials into a formal paper. You should reflect on what your social location is, how you
identify yourself in this world racially, ethnically, religiously, by class, sexual orientation, geographic location etc. using class materials to make your point. No
outside sources are expected in this paper since the primary goal of the paper is for you to continue to show me you are keeping up with the readings and thinking
critically about the readings. This paper will act as one of the major components of this class: for you to become aware of where you come from, what benefits
(privilege) and challenges (oppressions) you have acquired and experienced because of your location and how this background plays a part in how you interpret the
experiences of women as presented in this class. Understanding how your identity is complex will help you become more familiar with how you view the art and ideas
presented in this class.
This is an assignment that works together with the Social Identity Matrix (available on Blackboard). You are asked to reflect on what your social location is: how
you identify yourself in the world we live in (i.e. race, gender, class, ethnicity, citizenship, etc.). You are asked to think about how you have come to understand
your identities. Here are some things to think about when working on this assignment:
Who are you and where do you come from? (I’m a female from El Salvador born in the US)
How do you know you are a boy/girl/etc.?
What do you value and why? (God, family)
How do you know you are a member of a particular racial and/or ethnic group? (I’m hispanic)
What are practices, rituals, customs, stories, dances, food that your community values that helps you understand you are a member? (Hispanic customs, quinceanera
etc)
What do you learn about yourself from these experiences?
Are there any parts of your communal norms that you do not agree with or that are challenging? If so, what are they and why are they a challenge?
What aspects of your identities are affirming and supportive of who you are and what you do? Be specific and give examples.
Are there any differences you see between people in your community based on different identities (i.e. gender differences, people with disabilities, language).
Use this assignment to think about how you make sense of various topics and how you are informed about them from the communities you are a part of. It is important
to know how you identify so that you can express your opinions and ideas clearly when discussing topics in class. If you agree with something, you must understand why
you agree with it, and some of your experiences and group membership may be one reason. If you disagree with something, you must understand why you disagree with it
and how some of your experiences challenge different perspectives.
This paper is due on Sunday, July 27th. Make sure the paper is spell-checked, follows the guidelines for papers as outlined, and if necessary, includes a
bibliography and/or reference page (not counted toward the total number of pages in paper). You will be expected to use some of the language/terminology introduced in
class up until this point to express your ideas. Please create an introduction and conclusion and use strong topic sentences. I mark off significantly for paragraphs
that are too long (a page of 1 paragraph is too long). You may write this paper in first person.
Do NOT wait until the last minute to begin. If you have been keeping up with readings, class discussion posts, reaction paper and blog posts than you are in a
great position to write this paper. It is in your best interest to begin working on this paper gradually so you are not rushing to complete the assignment (I can tell
when folks rush an assignment).
