Cultural Event Paper
For this option you are required to attend a cultural event of any kind in order to experience a culture other than your own. Some examples of cultural events are attending a religious service that is different from your religion, weddings, births, funerals, coming of age rituals like a bar/bat mitzvah, Quinceanera, Chinese New Year, Deaf Cultural event, plays, etc. Write a four- to-five page paper consisting of a minimum of 1,250 words, typed, double spaced using proper MLA, APA, or ASA format about the cultural event based on the outline given below.
This option can be very insightful to the course in Culture and Personality, especially if you choose a cultural event that is different than your own culture.
**Please note, this is NOT a reflection paper on the cultural event. You are required to incorporate at least two (2) specific concepts form the class.**
Cultural Event Outline: (100 points)
A. Format of the paper: (10 points)
1. Typed using 12-point font
2. Double-spaced
3. 1” margins – it is obvious when you use a 1.25” or greater margin
4. Title Page:
i. Your Name
ii. Sociology 305
iii. Name of the Cultural Event Attended
iv. Word Count
B. Background (10 points)
1. Name of the Cultural Event attended
2. Location (address)
3. Hours: What time did it start, when did it end?
4. Purpose of the event: In one-to-two sentences, explain the purpose of the
event.
5. Who was there – was it open to the public or by invitation only?
6. How did you hear about it?
C. Collection and Relationship to our class in Culture and Personality: (This is the important part of the paper) (50 points)
1. Introduce and underline at least two specific concepts from the text. Introducing means to provide an explanation of your understanding of the concept, not simply state the concept.
2. CITE the textbook using proper MLA, APA, or ASA citation methods. (Hint – the textbook is properly cited using ASA style in this syllabus!! If you copy it, you need to make sure your in-text citations are also using ASA format)
3. Describe the cultural event – Go into greater detail than you did in your background. What did you see; was there a particular style of dress, type of food, music; what were the symbols, rituals, meanings, traditions of the event?
4. How does this cultural event show the influence of the personality of the

5. Observe the people around you who are also in attendance. What do you
