Same Sex Marriage: Constitutional and Cultural Considerations

Same Sex Marriage: Constitutional and Cultural Considerations

Technical requirements for the project:
1. Seven toeight pages (not including the works cited page), double spaced, no more than 1’’ margins. If you are not sure of how to make an MLA work cited entry or in-text source citation visit the NVC Library website for assistance, or discuss with a librarian. The NVC Writing Lab is also a great source for assistance. This weblink, which you have been given before, is also a good source: Purdue OWL: MLA Formatting and Style Guide
2. MLA format including in-text source citations and a works cited page. I expect at least 6 works cited entriesfrom an original source (not Wikipedia, Yahoo Answers, etc.). Research in the NVC library for journals, editorials, and articles from respected periodicals and, if you use online Internet sources, make sure they are credible (insofar as possible) by using .gov, .org, or .edu sources.
3. The completed paper and presentation is due on your final exam date according to the NVC calendar. Final exams are scheduled for the week of 12 May 2014.
4. You will make a 91/2 – 10 minute presentation in class, on the due date, focusing on the major points and conclusion(s) of your research. If you use PowerPoint, turn in a copy of slides (6 slides per page format).
5. Page one of your paper will be a synopsis of your findings and your opinion on what should be done by the government to address the problem. The remainder of the paper will be based on your research and the factual data necessary to support your synopsis and conclusion.
6. All late work will incur a 10% penalty per day for every day it is late. No work will be accepted 5 calendar days after the due date.

Academic requirements for the project:
1. PAPER SUBJECT: Your paper will address one of the following subjects: (NOTE: As this is a federal government class, consider the constitutional issues involved)
a. The Scope and Impact of Illegal Immigration On the United States
b. Same Sex Marriage: Constitutional and Cultural Considerations
c. Texas Voter ID Law (And other state’s similar laws)
d. The War in Afghanistan: Current Status and Projected Plan
e. The Affordable Health Care Bill – Pros and cons; Impact on America
f. The U.S. Debt: What is it? What are the causes? What are the effects? What are the solutions?
g. Additional topics of your choice may be available. Please discuss with me before deciding.
2. Immigration to the U.S. has been a subject of concern since the Republic was founded and there are numerous books, articles, etc. on the subject. Your job IS NOT to report on the 200 years of history about this topic, although you may find it appropriate to include limited references to the historical aspects. Your primary focus should be on the current problem of 10 to12 million illegal immigrants: how did this happen, what are the effects on the U.S. society and government, and what should be done and what is being done about it. What has Arizona (and other states) done? What is the DREAM ACT? What have the Congress and the President done about this?
3. Same sex marriage is a highly controversial topic in the United States. It impacts our culture, our governance, and, in many regards, peoples’ religious beliefs. While your religious beliefs are important and, for many people, provide guideposts for their daily conduct, the focus of this project should be on the constitutionality of same sex marriage and what, if any, should the government’s role be in deciding how this issue should be addressed. What have the states done? What is the Supreme Court’s involvement?
4. The Afghanistan war is another fast moving and volatile topic. For this topic, you should focus on how we got there, some of the significant problems of being there, and where do we go from here. What are the political implications for terminating our presence? What’s the cost? What is our relationship with the Afghan govt? What are the U.S. objectives in Afghanistan and have we accomplished them?
5. The Affordable Health Care Bill is a tremendously important piece of legislation that was implemented in 2014.What does it provide, what is the impact on various segments of American society, and what are the political concerns? What has happened so far with several states suing the federal government? Discuss the Supreme Court hearings on this case and what the “experts” expect the outcome will be.
6. The U.S. Debt – What is this problem? Why do we have it? What is or can be done to put the U.S. on a better financial footing? Much of the public dispute has centered on the president’s demand that taxes rise for the wealthy. But, entitlements are an essential element of the discussion because they are the main drivers of the nation’s borrowing problem over the years to come. What’s the solution? What’s the international effect?

7. The outline format for the paper is:
a. Synopsis and conclusions – Provide a short (no more than one page) summary of your findings.
b. What’s the Problem? – Describe what is causing all of this political and social concern. Who’s affected? What are the political, social, educational, and financial concerns created by this situation? What is the government’s role and what has been done? Discuss the pros and cons of the issue and provide factual data to support your arguments on both sides. For example:
c. What’s the Solution? Find out what the Senate, the House, and the President plan to do. Have some States proposed their own solution? How about other groups who support or oppose the issue? Is there more than one solution or is there any solution at all?
d. Your Opinion – Now that you have researched, evaluated, and considered the facts, this is the place for you to express your own views.
8. You may do this project with a partner or by yourself. In either event, your first deadline is Monday, 14 April 2014. Due on this date will be a one to two page paper with the following information:
a. Name(s) of persons responsible for this paper.
b. Topic of the paper
c. Outline of the paper showing major section headings and a briefcomment on what will be covered in each section. You must do an outline based on your preliminary research and reading of the literature. This will be your blueprint for constructing and writing the paper.
