Research in Child Development

There are a number of research designs that are used in developmental research. Correlational research is research design that is used by developmental researchers. As discussed in your textbook, correlational research is used to show a relationship between two variables. For example, as the amount of time children spend watching violent television increases, the amount of aggressive behavior by children tends to increase. In this case the two variables are watching violent television and aggressive behaviors. Correlations can be positive or negative. A positive correlation occurs when both variables increase or decrease together. Television viewing and aggressive behaviors have a positive correlation because both variables increase or decrease together. In other words, as watching violent television increases, aggressive behaviors tend to increase. And as watching violent television decreases, aggressive behaviors tend to decrease. In correlational research you can also have a negative correlation. A negative correlation occurs when one variable increases and the second variable tends to decrease. For example, the more young children wear safety belts in the car the lower the chance that the child will be hurt in a car accident. In this case the two variables are wearing safety belts and being hurt in an accident. In this case as one variable (wearing safety belts) increases, the other variable (getting hurt in a car crash) tends to decrease.

Create your own correlational research question. (Do not use the examples provided here.) Write your correlational research question like this: What is the relationship between __________ and _________? Is this relationship positive or negative, and why?
