1. In the film, Ocean of Pearls, we see the main character (Amrit) wrestling with his appearance. Traditionally, Sikhs do not cut their hair… the idea being that a believer should not change what God has created so perfectly. Sikh women often keep it long, but in public Sikh men cover their hair with a turban. Facing discrimination at a new job in the United States (which is illegal, but definitely happens), Amrit makes a dramatic decision. Describe what happens to his appearance over time. Do you agree with what he did? What do you think would have happened if he made different choices?
2. Compare the dress of Hasidic Jews to the Amish. What do they wear? (consider both supplements and modifications) Why do they dress that way? What are the similarities and differences?
3. One of the videos poses the question, “Is traditional Islamic dress appropriate in today’s Western societies?” What do you think? Chapter 3 in the textbook is helpful for understanding what kinds of dress are typically associated with Islam… don’t just rely on what you’ve seen in the media.
