You must begin with a thesis that makes a specific historical argument derived from the prompt. You may begin with work you have already produced in this class (including the short paper) or you may choose to begin with a fresh start. Format: Your paper must be 3-5 pages (3 pages 750-850 words possible C paper) (5 pages 1250–1500 words possible A paper), typed, paginated, and double-spaced. Use a 12 point font such as Times or Currier and 1 inch margins.

Please note you can only earn a possible A if your write a 5 page paper. The best grade you can possible earn from a 3 page paper is a C.

Research requirements:

Secondary Source: You must use a minimum of four scholarly sources (reference materials such as your textbook, encyclopedias and the Internet are not scholarly sources) that focus on the ancient historical context. Academic journals published in their entirety online and come through research databases are acceptable examples of scholarly secondary source.

Internet Sources: You may use reference material and Internet sources but these are in addition to your required four scholarly sources.

Primary Source: You must reference a minimum of one ancient original textual document (in translation of course) in your paper. I encourage the use of several examples of primary source.

Locating primary source: I have two major recommendations for locating the primary source for your paper. For this paper your primary source must be a document. You may not use a picture or an artifact.

My first recommendation is that you check the footnotes of your secondary sources to identify the primary sources that the author used. These texts can often be located in edited volumes of ancient documents, library and online archives, and sometimes can be ordered through interlibrary loan.

My second recommendation is the much easier (and recommended) approach. Go to Fordham University History Sourcebooks. These Websites operated by Fordham University are extremely reliable and provide a large collection of historical primary source documents in English translation in addition to secondary source resources. You should be careful of many fraudulent document translations on the web but you can trust what you find on the Fordham sites. The following link will take you to Ancient History Sourcebook.
