Qualitative Approaches to Researching Management and Organisations

Methods of Assessment

The assessment of this module is the equivalent of a 100%, 3,000-word essay but divided into 2 parts.
Part 1 is an assessed presentation that covers the Research Philosophy aspect of a research proposal, in some depth. This is complemented by Part 2 which is a 1,500-word research proposal.
The weighting for the two elements of the assessment is 50:50.

The assessed presentations will take place between Week 21 and Week 23 of the term and take the form of group presentations of selected topics on research philosophy.
The Research Proposal will also be submitted in week 31 (Wednesday, 30-04-14)
Assessed Presentations: Some details

Normally, groups are composed of 4 students. Presentations are 15-20 minutes, followed by 5 minutes questions from the tutor and other students. There will be 2 presentations per seminar in Weeks 21 and 22 and 1 presentation in Week 23. Strict adherence to time limits will be expected.

The tutor will award a group mark and an individual mark after questioning of individual students. The class will also award a mark for the group presentation. Finally, the presenting members will also anonymously award each member of the group a mark that reflects the input of that member of the group.

Group Presentation – Question 2

Sensemaking is an essential aspect of daily life. Explore the various ways in which human beings make sense in their day-to-day experiences

Some Guidelines

This question is about sensemaking. Maybe you would like to explore the ideas of Weick, Mannheim or Crossley. The question requires you to examine the paradox of individual differences against shared meanings and shared realities. How and when does one person’s mode of meaning-making coincide/resonate with another’s when there is a myriad of ways in which misunderstanding may occur? See Nick Crossley on Intersubjectivity: the fabric of social becoming (1996), London, Sage; or Goffman, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, or Weick on meaning-making, or any of the texts suggested for Question 1 above.
