Purpose: The goal of these journal writing assignments is to help you learn key concepts in psychology by writing about them.

Instructions for journal entries: Journals must be typed, double-spaced, and submitted as a .docx file. Please make it clear which chapter you are referring to. The scope of journal topics that you will be given is limited so that each journal prompt can be answered in 1-2 paragraphs (approximately 100-200 words). You will find the prompts for Chapters 14, 15 and 16 below. You need to submit your journal assignment to the appropriate D2L drop box by Wednesday, May 7 at 9 am.

The schedule of textbook readings is in the course syllabus. As a rule of thumb, you are expected to read about one chapter in the text each week. I would recommend keeping up on these journaling assignments and working on them as we are covering that chapter instead of waiting until all three chapters are covered before working on your journal entries.

Journal Prompts:

DO NOT INCLUDE THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ASSIGNMENT OR THE JOURNAL PROMPTS IN YOUR PAPER!!! SIMPLY WRITE THREE COHERENT RESPONSES TO THE THREE PROMPTS BELOW:

Chapter 14 (3 points): In your own words, describe what cognitive dissonance theory is and provide a novel, real-life example (one that was not presented in the textbook or in class) to illustrate your understanding of cognitive dissonance.

Chapter 15 (3 points): In order to draw the distinction between normality and psychological disorder, psychologists have defined psychological disorders as “deviant, distressful and dysfunctional patterns of thoughts, feelings or behaviors” (Myers, 2013). In your own words, describe what this definition means by generating your own scenario of someone with a psychological disorder (you do not need to specify what the disorder is but just describe the person’s symptoms), clearly illustrating how that individual’s thoughts, feelings or behaviors are deviant, distressful AND dysfunctional. You must connect your response directly to the “3 D’s” in order to get full credit. Do not simply describe a person with a psychological disorder.

Chapter 16 (3 points): Suppose you are a behavior therapist, and you are using systematic desensitization to help one of your clients with a dysfunctional behavior she is exhibiting. First, identify what your client’s dysfunctional behavior is. (You choose the behavior.) Then describe in your own words what systematic desensitization is, and discuss how you would apply classical conditioning procedures using systematic desensitization to help your client with that specific behavior.
