Media Assessment Comprehensive Course Project (Final Project)
You will be turning in a 10-page (including graphs & charts), typed, 12-point font (Times New Roman or Helvetica), double-spaced report thoroughly addressing the following 9 questions. Please number your answers individually.
DO NOT INCLUDE THE ORIGINAL PROJECT QUESTIONS IN YOUR REPORT.
1. Choose any two movies that deal with mental illness/psychological disorders (for this Project, you should have access to your movies on DVD, VHS, or DVR format so you can watch the movies (and specific scenes) multiple times while writing your report). The movies must have significant character development (no documentaries). Thoroughly describe the plots, main characters, and settings of both movies (2 – 3 paragraphs for each movie).
2. Describe the target audiences (gender, age range, ethnicity, etc.) of your movies.
3. Do you feel that children, adolescents and adults look to movies for role models in their lives? Would you consider any of the main characters in the movies to be positive role models? If so, describe in detail. As a child/adolescent, did you have any movie role models while growing up? Explain in detail.
4. You will choose one main character from each movie (a total of two characters). Utilizing the 10 scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) (Hypochondriasis, Depression, Hysteria, Psychopathic Deviancy, Masculinity/Femininity, Paranoia, Psychasthenia, Schizophrenia, Hypomania and Social Introversion) and the “Big 5” Personality Factors (Emotional Stability, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness), conduct a detailed personality analysis on your two main characters (to make it simple, you may use a 1 – 10 scale for completing this portion). You are encouraged to create a chart or graph for each of your main characters, and justify your graphs/charts in writing. You are encouraged to conduct a comprehensive internet search on the MMPI and “Big 5” Personality factors for completing this portion of the project (in addition to the information in your textbook).
5. Overall, do your movies primarily support Id, Ego, or Superego personality development? Describe in detail and give specific examples.
6. Clearly describe situations in your programs that illustrate defense mechanisms (regression, repression, reaction formation, displacement, sublimation, rationalization, and projection) that are utilized by the main characters in the movies?
7. Do your movies portray a realistic representation of handling stressful situations? What do children and adolescents learn about handling stressful situations from watching your movies?
8. Do your movies deal with societal issues such as stereotypes, terrorism, corruption, homosexuality, prejudice, and violence in a realistic manner? Do you feel that the movie industry has a “social obligation” to address such societal issues?
9. What is the overall effect of movie viewing on children/adolescents personality and social development? How does movie viewing influence children and adolescents’ interactions with siblings, peers, teachers, and parents/guardians? Do you feel this influence is primarily positive or negative? Support and justify your opinion.
