Psychology

Throughout the term we worked on preparing a paper that you submit as a final research paper at the end of the term. This paper, 12-15 pages in length (not including title and reference pages), is a Research Proposal in which you will propose and outline a research project in the field of Psychology.

A. Here is a rough outline for your final paper.

I. Broad statement of your topic area

II. Literature review – this should be organized around the main topics introduced in your broad statement. For example,

“Each year companies spend considerable amounts of money on leadership conferences. However, the efficacy of these conferences and their implications for company productivity is unclear”

If this is the general statement of the topic area, then the literature review would be organized as follows:

1 – the amount of money spent on conferences
2 – the efficacy of conferences in improving leadership
3 – evidence of changes in company productivity as a result of good leadership

III. Statement of specific research question – this should follow naturally from the literature review.

B. In the second part of the research proposal you have to present your approach to the problem and the methodology you plan to use. An outline for this part follows.

I. Present your approach (i.e., will you be interviewing, giving questionnaires, running an experiment) and JUSTIFY this approach (will you use this method because it has been effective in the past, or is this an exploratory study, etc?)

For example, given the topic in the above example I may introduce this section as follows. “In order to understand the relationship between conference attendance and company productivity I plan to do a simple count of the number of conferences attended by the management of each company. I will then use the company productivity measures created by Smith et al (1990) because these have been demonstrated as reliable measures (Glade et al, 1993). This will allow me a fast if not very detailed picture of any relationship.” Then go on to describe the planned approach to each variable. In this case, conference efficacy, etc.

A. include a description of your population of interest
B. include a description of your materials (questionnaires, interview items)

II. Describe what you plan to do with the data you collect – this can be very simple and short, but you should reiterate what relationship you are looking for, etc.

III. Describe how this methodology and approach will answer your research question – why is this the best way to answer your question?

IV. Finally, in a closing paragraph, outline the importance of your proposed work.
