COURSE ASSESSMENT 2

Late Penalty System

This module is being delivered through the Manchester Blackboard virtual
learning environment.
All assessments must be submitted through Blackboard at:
http://online.manchester.ac.uk/
If you have any technical difficulties using blackboard, please visit our
support pages at: http://www.studentnet.manchester.ac.uk/blackboard

Submitting your Assignment

1.  Assignments  should  be  typed,  10  or  11  point  font  size  (Times  Roman  or  similar  if
possible) double spaced with a 4 cm margin on the right side of the page with the
page size specified as UK A4. All pages must be numbered.

2.  Assignments  should  be  submitted  in  Microsoft  Office  Project  format  (.mpp,  etc.).  File
names  should  be  kept  simple  and only  contain  alphanumeric  characters  (a-z0-9),
spaces and underscores (e.g. Valid_filename_1.doc). Files with other characters such
as apostrophes, brackets or commas may not be accessible by markers.

3.  Assignments may be uploaded only once; substitutions are not permitted and students
should therefore ensure that the version uploaded is their final submission.

4. Please  ensure  you  include  your  student  number  and  the  assignment  reference
(PPC/Student Number/Jul14/2) in all submitted assignments and that assignments
are paginated. Failure to do this may lead either to a grade not being assigned or being
wrongly assigned

5.  If you are experiencing any difficulty in uploading your assignment to Blackboard, please
email  a  copy  of  the  assignment  and  a  screenshot  of the  error  message immediately  to
your local centre/Student Adviser.

IMPORTANT: ALWAYS RETAIN A COPY OF YOUR ASSIGNMENT

WARNING: Once submitted no substitute assignments will be allowed

Please ensure you include your student number and the assignment reference (PPC/Student
Number/Jul14/2) in all submitted assignments and that assignments are paginated. Failure to
do this may lead either to a grade not being assigned or being wrongly assigned
CASE #4 THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PERT NETWORK DIAGRAM AND ITS
COMPUTATION
IMPORTANTLY, this case assignment will be assessed and the submission
deadline is 5 October 2014, Sunday (23:55 Beijing time)

Following  Case  3,  when  developing  the  schedule  of  the AEC  project,  the  time  estimates  of
some activities are found to appear uncertain. The following table provides optimistic, most

QUESTIONS
1.  Which  uncertainties  need  to  be  considered  when  you make  the  schedule  of  the  AEC
project?
2.  Develop  the  optimistic,  pessimistic  and  expected  Gantt  chart  and  network  diagram,  and
compute the optimistic, pessimistic and expected start time of the AEC project using MS
Project if the progress objective of the AEC project is 31 March 2013. Discuss if there is
any  change  of  the  critical  path  from  the  optimistic  network  diagram  to  the  pessimistic
network diagram.
3.  Compute  the  project  finish  times  with  low  risks,  base-risks  and  high  risks  by  using  MS
Project  plus  RiskyProject  (download  RiskyProject  Professional  from
http://www.intaver.com  and  also  read  http://www.intaver.com/index-projectmanagementforeducation1.html: the students may download 30-day trial licenses).
(This question is for your further study and you are NOT required to submit the answer
to this question)
4.  Compare your answers for the
1st
,
2nd
and
3rd
question with those given by Mr. He; find the
differences and discuss each difference.(You are NOT required to submit the answer to
this  question  and  you  are  required  to  do  this  question  after  you  submit  your  answers  to
Questions 1, 2 and 3.)

THE REFERENCE ANSWERS OF CASE 2

1.  Develop  your  OBS  (Organizational  Breakdown  Structure)  corresponding  to  all  activities
developed in Case 1.

The  Headquarters  is  first  broken  down  into  the  departmental  level  and  then  further  broken  down
into  the  next  level,  for  example,  the  OBS  component  “Architectural  Planning  and  Design
Department  (APDD)”  is  further  broken  down  into  “The  manager  for  the  project  proposal
development and feasibility study”, “The manager for the architectural design”, etc., and the OBS
component  “Equipment  Department  (ED)”  is  further  broken  down  into  “The  manager  for  power
supply and distribution systems”, “The manager for boilers and water treatment equipment”, “The
manager for cooling towers”, etc. The graphical representation of the OBS of the Shanghai Airport
Construction Headquarters is shown as follows.

Figure 4 The graphical representation of the OBS of the Shenz Airport Construction Headquarters

2.  Develop your RACI Matrix to show the relationships of the WBS (developed in Case 1) and the OBS.

The RACI Matrix of the project of the AEC is shown in the following table.
