The idea of continuing professional education (CPE) is a concept I am very familiar with. Since the year 2000 my husband had to participate in mandatory continuing education classes to maintain his optical license each year and each year he complained and waited until the very last minute to complete the training. Before I knew anything about Houle’s work on CPE, I understood why my husband had to attend; basically he had to keep up with current trends and changes to the field of optometry and demonstrate that he know the information by passing a standardized test at the end. Jeris refers to the work of Houle as a pioneer in CPE and that his book, Continue Learning in the Profession(1980), describes the characteristics of CPE and how his work is still relevant today(2010, p.276). As an adult educator, I understand the need for CPE, we are all lifelong learners and society changes so much each day with technological advances it is a good thing to be ahead of the game. By no means do I feel I know everything there is to know about adult education, after graduation I will continue to seek knowledge. Although my husband complained about the fees, on many occasions he did admit to me that he learned something new and can apply it to the real world; ultimately, this is certainly one of the goals of CPE.
