This assignment requires you to identify a process and, through the use of several problem-solving/improvement tools, improve the potential performance of the process.

1. Identify the company you have selected and its primary products or services.

2. Select a process within the company and describe the primary inputs, outputs, suppliers, and customers for the process.

3. Through a high level flowchart, demonstrate how the process fits into the rest of the company?s processes.

4. Conduct an interview with the primary customer and supplier of the process, as well as the people performing the process. Identify the expectations of each party.

5. DEFINE—Define a problem that is occurring within the process. Use the high level process map and a pareto analysis to better identify the problem. This step should also address what needs to be done by whom and when.

6. MEASURE?Understand the nature of the process performance and collect data necessary for analysis. Within this section, you should provide a description of what is being measured and the measurement system you are using to gather the data, as well as how the company currently measures the process and gathers data. Techniques you should develop in this step include the run chart, check sheets, any relevant descriptive statistics, process capability analysis (if possible), and benchmarking.

7. ANALYZE?Perform an analysis of the process. Begin by developing a detailed flowchart of the process. Follow this with an analysis of why defects, errors, or excessive variation occur in the process. Depict the data on a scatter diagram. Develop a cause and effect diagram to depict the possible problem causes.

8. IMPROVE?Once the cause of the problem has been determined, use brainstorming, mistake proofing, lean production tools, and any of the seven management tools to identify potential process improvements.

9. Select the best suggestion(s) for the company to implement (provide your rationale) and describe the steps by which the company would implement the suggestions.

10. CONTROL?Develop the controls which would ensure that the improvements are maintained. You might establish new standards, procedures, training, checklists, or performance measures. Develop a control chart of the process (with the relevant data plotted on the charts).
