Problem Statement Development
For this assignment you will identify and state a real world business problem. The development of a clear and complete statement that accurately describes and defines a business problem is essential to the processes of decision making and problem solving. Once you have selected a problem, you will have made a good start toward its resolution if it is effectively defined. You may find upon developing the problem statement that what you thought was the basic cause of the problem is something totally different than what you suspected. Therefore, a properly developed problem statement is essential to ensure the right decisions are made and the right actions are taken in an effort to resolve the correct problem.
Guidelines
Keep in mind that a problem should not be confused with a task item or a to-do item. To determine if a situation is truly a problem, ask the following questions:
Is there a discrepancy between the current state and desired state?
When does the problem occur?
Where does it occur?
What precipitates the occurrence?
Does it make a difference to someone?
Who is affected, and in what ways?
Is the discrepancy measurable or observable?
Is the problem getting better or worse?
Is the problem short-term or long-term?
Are there possible courses of corrective action?
What will happen if we ignore the problem?
Action Items
Identify an actual problem within the current organization where you work or one where you have worked recently.
Notes:
The selected problem should be:
A problem which you have some influence over, input in, participation with, are affected by, or is relevant to you.
A problem that is important enough for you to spend your time and energy working on.
A problem that can be substantially resolved or toward which significant progress can be made during the duration of this course.
Be sure you are familiar with the details surrounding your selected problem as you will use it throughout individual course assignments.
To find a problem to work with, you should look to one of the following sources, starting with the first and going down the list until you identify a source:
Your current workplace
Your former workplace
A friend’s workplace
Personal problem
A local social problem
A local community organization problem
workplace problems are best for this course (if you are not currently working, consider other social organizations that you belong to, or prior workplace problems, or help a friend/family member resolve something at their work)avoid problems related to someone else’s behavior (most of the time we cannot change someone else’s behavior, skills, or motivations. In the workplace, HR techniques may be better suited than the tools we will learn here)avoid business strategy problems (as there are better tools for strategy decisions that we won’t cover in class, but you will cover them in your capstone course)
take an objective management view of your problem (examine it from the lens of management; as a broader vision of the problem will become clear, more solutions will be available, and your rationale will be multi-faceted)
choose operational, workflow, or process-related problems, as opposed to simple decisions
aim for a piece of a larger problem, not the entire thing (if you have a large, complex problem area at work, this is the opportune time to work on a piece of it, since it may be cumbersome to address the whole thing)
your problem must be something that can be reasonably and rationally resolved (not just a complaint or opinion or something that is unpopular)
Some other things to consider for your problem choice:
Write a 1-page, double-spaced paper in which you include the following items as a draft of your problem statement:
A short background on the problem situation.
A description of the problem symptoms.
A concise statement of the problem in one sentence.
