Paper instructions:
1. Define and explain the differences between cognitive behavioral therapy and reality therapy. Which theory do you feel is the most effective in working with offenders? Why?
2. Define and explain the arguments for and against arrest powers and firearms for probation and parole officers. Which side do you agree with? Why?
3. Explain a technical violation versus a new arrest violation. What kind of recommendation would you make to the court based on the type of violation?
4. What are the options available when a probation/parole officer discovers a violation? Taking into account everything you have learned about the correctional system; what would you recommend for a minor, medium and significant violation? Why?
5. Define and explain three intermediate punishments. Why or why not do you think they are effective in the supervision of offenders?
6. Probation has tried many different approaches to try to rehabilitate offenders. There have been times when PO’s are “generalists” (taking any type of case) and “specialized “such as a drug court or DWI court. What are the advantages and disadvantages of specialized caseloads? Which type of case load do you thing is the most effective. Why?
7. Define and explain the characteristics of community justice. Do you think this is an effective use of probation resources? Why or Why not?
8. Define and explain Interstate Compact. What are the problems with Interstate Compact? In your opinion, is interstate compact an effective way to do supervision? Why or Why not?
9. Please explain why is it difficult to measure the “success” of probation or parole? What do you think is a good indication of success if you were a probation officer?
10. Explain the differences between determinate and indeterminate sentencing. Which one do YOU think is the most effective and why? Please use everything you have learned in this course to answer this question.
