It asks a question–whether morality (justice) is something people want because of its results or benefits to themselves only, or is it something they want for its own sake.

Read the story and then write a brief two or three pararaphs responding to the following question:

What does it mean to say that morality or justice can be beneficial to a person, or in his or her self interest? And how does the Gyges story challenge the idea that morality or virtue is its own reward–that is, good in itself.

A good way or organizing is to have a paragraph about the rewards of being good, a second paragraph explaining the Gyges story, and how it related to morality and reward (or immorality and punishment), and a third explaining what conclusions about the rewards of morality one might draw.

A really excellent essay might go on to discuss how Socrates’ willingness to die (in The Apology) for an ethical principle connects with the story of Gyges– While it’s true that Socrates says that we don’t know if death is bad, generally suppose that most would prefer to put it off as long as possible…
