Q1.
The only part of Hegel’s vast output that we are examining is his basic system of thesis–antithesis–synthesis. It has a built-in bias towards the “progression” of history toward better and better results. Do you think Hegel gives an accurate description of how history unfolds? Can anything be done to improve change over time?

Q2.

Hegel’s “System” begins with God’s thought. Why does it immediately go to “nothingness”? And what is the significance of the “becoming” that results from this first swing of the pendulum of history?

Q3.

Hegel’s system seems to build in an optimistic bias, but when we look back at history, some later eras appear LESS successful than earlier ones. Is Hegel right–are things getting better over time as we resolve more tensions? Or is it random or even chaotic? Give some examples from history if you know of any.

Q4.

What do you think of Schopenhauer’s pessimistic conception of the human will as the content of Kant’s unknowable “rational” aspect of the universe? Can all of our choices and behaviors be accurately described in terms of Schopenhauer’s concept of will? If not, what are some exceptions?
