Week 4: The Walden Library
Introduction
As you progress through your Walden program, you will find the Walden Library an essential resource that will facilitate your success. As a Walden University student, you will be asked to locate and retrieve peer-reviewed articles – materials that have met the highest academic criteria – and to cite them in papers that you write. However, not even the top research library is able to serve all the needs of students engaged in scholarly research. Thus, students sometimes turn to other sources, including libraries in other schools for their research needs.
This week you will be introduced to searching a Walden Library database and saving the results, to the concept of peer review, and to using nearby libraries, statewide systems of databases, and Walden Library’s Document Delivery Service (DDS)–
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this week you should be able to:
?Identify and describe alternate databases and resources and explain their usefulness to other scholar-practitioners
?Access, search, and download a peer-reviewed article as well as a citation and abstract from a Walden Library database

But what is scholarly writing? What makes for effective scholarly writing? And what is a scholarly voice? This week you will explore the concept of scholarly writing, assess your own strengths and weaknesses in the area, and begin to apply the skill of scholarly writing. As you do so, you will consider the concepts of purpose, audience, bias, and evidence as they relate to scholarly writing.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this week you should be able to:

Introduction
In your previous educational experiences, you may or may not have been exposed to APA style, or you may have studied it so long ago that you have forgotten what that even means. Week 10: APA Form and Style, Part II: References, Citations, and Paraphrasing
Introduction
If you were to invent a brand new way to solve a problem, you would want to get credit for it, right? Or, if you wrote a really beautiful poem and someone wanted to use it, you would you want that person to at least give you credit for having written it, correct? Giving credit to others for their ideas is very important in professional writing. This is true whether you cite something verbatim or paraphrase it. In fact, the skill of paraphrasing is useful in avoiding plagiarism. This week, you will review and build upon information you learned in Week 6 to learn how to use references, citations, and paraphrasing when using and crediting others’ work.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this week you should be able to:
?Construct a Reference list
?Correctly cite one or more authors of a journal article
?Paraphrase and quote correctly using correct APA style
?Apply APA guidelines

Week 11: Introduction to Critical Thinking in the Social Sciences
Introduction
If you are like many people, you have many opinions. For example, you may have experience as a therapist, and your clinical judgment tells you that a particular therapy works with a particular type of person. How do you know that this is true? Because it works for one or two people, can you assume that it works for everyone? This week, you will learn how to use evidence to balance opinion and personal experience, a hallmark of social scientific writing.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this week you should be able to:
?Explain the distinctions and connections among common sense, science, personal beliefs, and human behaviors
?Define the concept of "belief perseverance" and explain how it interferes with critical thinking

two health behavior theories
The purpose of this assignment is to help students practice synthesizing and integrating different perspectives into more meaningful programs and research studies. Now that students have seen and critiqued what others have done, the final assignment is to develop a hypothetical program based on theory. For this assignment, you are required to use/integrate at least two theories. Write it as if I know nothing about the theories. Describe the problem or condition, the target population, the theories you are using, why you chose these theories (why they are the best ones to apply to the problem), what elements of the theory apply to your program, and how you will translate the theoretical constructs into action in your program (how you will operationally utilize them). Include a diagram of how the various pieces of the theory and the program relate.
A 10-15 page paper is required with a minimum of ten scientific references. All references must be from peer-reviewed scientific sources.
