Parametric vs. Nonparametric Tests
Discussion on Parametric vs. Nonparametric Tests
In Week 5, you read that when considering the difference in a continuous variable, like weight, in two independent groups the 2-sample independent t-test should be used. In Week 7 you saw that if you have more than two groups you should use ANOVA. This week’s Discussion requires that you differentiate between parametric and nonparametric tests.
To prepare for this Discussion, review Chapter 10 in your course text as well as the Statistical Test Decision Tree (.jpg file). Then select a public health example of interest to you (or from the literature) and consider it in light of the Kruskal-Wallis test.
Post a brief description of a public health example (of your own or from the literature). Then, explain when it would be appropriate to use the Kruskal-Wallis test and why. Finally, include in your answer an assessment of the assumptions required to use the parametric form of the Kruskal-Wallis test.
