Painting and sculpture description and analysis

Painting and sculpture description and analysis

Formal analysis of a work
Due Date: March 6, in class

For this 3-4 page paper you will formally analyze and compare two works of art; identifying
those visual elements of design (line, color, space, medium etc.) to provide a thorough description of the work, and discussing how these works differ, and/or what they share. This first section does not include a discussion of subject matter and meaning. For example, if the image in question has a figure with arms held up in front of them you would not write that ‘there is a figure praying,’ or ‘that figure is an angel or a saint.’ That would be an ascription of subject matter and assigning meaning to the gesture of uplifted arms. You would simply describe the figure, for example: ‘This figure stands with arms upraised at a ninety-degree angle to their torso, with palms facing upward.’ Treat your description as if you are presenting it to someone who has not seen it. Therefore, you must establish the larger picture, what we are looking at (painting? sculpture? number of figures? what figures are doing?) before you can begin discussing more specific/smaller details.

You will choose which works to analyze from one of the two sets listed, below. Choose and write on only one set.

After you have provided a thorough description and comparison of the works, feel free to share your opinion on the works. What feelings do this image convey? How do the works function, if at all? What is the artist trying to achieve? Is the dog just a dog? This section should come at the end of your paper.

The paper should have an appropriate introduction and conclusion.
