For this assignment you will listen to the following three musical examples and write a program for each as well as describe how the elements of the music lend themselves to your program.

Example no. 1:
BIBER – Violin Sonata No. 1 in A Major, C. 138: I. —

Example no.2:
Erik Satie, Gnossienne No. 4, 4ieme Gnossienne. Lent

Example no.3:
Charles Ives, Scherzo for String Quartet: Scherzo

Your program should be written in paragraph form and you can tell a story or describe a mood, place, thing, event, or anything else that the music inspires in you. Do not do any research on the pieces but I would like you to use the terminology from handout #1 to describe how the rhythm, texture, dynamics, and other elements express your program. You will need to listen to the pieces at least three times before you start writing and keep listening until you are done and satisfied with your paper.

This assignment should be approached as a formalized version of the informal writings we do in class but because it is a formal paper you should read it out loud several times and revise it before you turn it in. You will be graded on having put thought into your program, proper use of the terms from handout #1 to support your program, and readability. You should write about half a page for your program and half a page about the elements for each work. Your discussion of the elements should include as many as possible including the meter, tempo (and tempo changes in the work), timbre, instruments, etc.
