MP1532 Manufacturing Engineering
Design and Make Assignment – ImechE Design Challenge Competition
Submission dates: (all submissions to Wharf Stores 4pm)
Task 1 Friday 23rd January 4pm – Submit Sketches for Design Challenge
Task 2 Friday 6th February 4pm – Engineering Drawings plus Manufacturing Plans
Friday 17th April 2015 4pm –Submission of IMechE Design Challenge Report
The following learning outcomes will be addressed:
LO3. Construct engineering drawings for manufacture. Construct Engineering Drawings to relevant industrial standard for use in manufacturing
LO5. Practice and show report writing skills. Show effective report writing skills in the form of a technical document with appropriate technical language and structure
LO6. Practice the design and manufacture process. Show effective use of a range of manufacturing processes.
Tasks
Students must design and manufacture a component from a given design brief. This will be done in three stages – For Task 3 only you will work in a team to manufacture the device, all other tasks are to be done individually
Task 1 (mark 10%) Submit preliminary design sketches showing the development of your ideas and consideration of possible manufacturing processes to be used for your design.
Task 2 (mark 20%) Submit all working technical drawings (CAD or hand drafted) and an operation sheet/manufacturing plan for each component in your design.
Task 3 (mark 35%) In teams you will take one of your teams design and manufacture it using a range of manufacturing processes, materials and available. Each team member will be responsible for an element of the design. The finished design will be judged by lecturers and peers.
Task 4 (mark 35%) Produce a word processed technical report highlighting how you have contributed to the design challenge and how you have effectively planned for, and used, a range of manufacturing processes. Include original sketches and manufacturing drawings in the appendix. Discuss which aspects went well and review any problems which had to be overcome (8 sides A4 maximum not including appendix, can include relevant diagrams/images)
This course work is worth 40% of the total mark for the module.
Please consider the following:
• A range of process should be used, typically three workshop manufacturing methods to be employed
• Task should be realistically achievable considering available time and material /resources available
• Selection of materials must ideally be from stock or readily sourced from approved suppliers not exceeding the given budget (£20)
• Task must take into account personal skill level
The project must make use of techniques, procedures and skills developed in the preceding semester of the module. Working detailed drawings and manufacturing plans must be produced and approved before any manufacturing may be commenced.
All four tasks will be assessed, submit each task in your final report
