Perform an analysis of a Grand Nursing Theory or a Mid-Range Nursing Theory using the provided rubric as an outline. Choose a theorist that you are either interested in or that you believe will be applicable to your nursing practice (present or future). The theory analysis is to be conducted on a nursing theory. Other theories of interest must receive instructor approval.
General Description of the paper: The actual analysis of the philosophy, concept, or theory is carried out through a review of the literature, which should consist of no less than ten (10) references, some of which should be research articles (note: depending on the theorist, it may be difficult to find related research. Please approach the instructor should you have trouble with this requirement). Use a variety of sources in your search. Use classic and/or primary sources on the philosophy, concept, or theory (these may be older than 5 years). Augment references with other journal articles.
As you write each section of the paper, incorporate definitions and information about the philosophy, concept or theory. For example, define a philosophy, concept, model or theory early in the paper. Tell the reader about the steps used to build one and describe each step (see Fawcett).
Length of paper, APA Format, and Grammar: Page length varies by complexity of topic. Generally the text length should be from 8 to 15 pages (not including title page, abstract, table of contents or references). Consistent use of APA format IS REQUIRED. The instructor reserves the right to deduct up to one full letter grade from papers that show evidence of significant deviations from APA format, multiple spelling errors, and incorrect grammar.
Evaluation of each part of the paper will be made according to the designated pointsas identified in the rubric.
This paper is often the first scholarly paper graduate students write in this program and you may want some assistance. Please consider using The Learning Enhancement Center if you feel you need additional help.
** Special note: In addition, correct sentence construction, grammar, and punctuation are expected to receive full credit. The instructor reserves the right to deduct one full letter grade from papers that show evidence of significant deviations from APA format, multiple spelling errors, and incorrect grammar.
Section Points to Cover Points Assigned Points Earned
A. Introduction Broad Overview (Capture the reader). 15
B. Background Historical evolution of the model or theory
1. Context of Authorship& Summary Briefly describe theorist’s background and discuss how their backgrounds may have influenced their(nursing) theory development. When was the theory written? What were some of the major factors of that time, in the realm of nursing (or appropriate discipline if non-nursing theory) and/or in the world, that might have had some effect on the development of these theories? Concisely summarize the theory by describing it in your own words. What global issue(s) does the theory address? 15
2. Worldview Identify the worldview that is reflected by the theorist and theory (person, health, environment, & nursing)? Or, how does the theorist adapt the theory to reflect the nursing metaparadigm? 15
3. Additional Discussion Present information that is referenced to the original and/or current work of the theorist. Include a discussion of what other authors have written about your chosen theory. Discuss the historical evolution of the theory? Has there been any substantive change to the theory since it was written? Identify and include a discussion of other theories and/or the works of other theorists that have had a significant influence the work of the theorist. 25
C. Analysis
1. Theory Substance Nursing theory:What are the major concepts of each theory? How are they defined (theoretically or operationally)?Include theoretical and/or operational definition for all concepts. Have the concepts and their meanings remained the same throughout the historical development of the theories or have they changed over time? Identify the relationships among the major concepts for each theory (this is where a diagram is useful). Provide a diagram for each theory, if available. Discuss the classification of the theory (conceptual model, grand theory, or middle range theory)? Provide rationale is support of your position. 25
2. Analysis (based loosely on Chin & Kramer) Nursing theory: Accuracy/current: Does the theory describe nursing as it exists today (not past, nor future)? Provide rationale is support of your position.Consistency: Is there a logical order to the theories? Are terms, concepts, or statement used consistently? Is the author consistent in the use of the concepts and other terms in the theory?Clarity: How clear is the theory? Simplicity: How simple is this theory? Generality: Does the theory cover a wide scope of experiences and phenomena? Can the theory be generalized to variety of situations? Importance: Can the theory contribute to nursing practice, research, and education? Provide rationale is support of your position.Universality:Do the components of the theory logically translate into diverse perspectives (e.g. cultural, socio-economic, developmental, gender) or is the theory limited to a certain group?

D. Evaluation/Application
1. Nursing process In general, how can the chosen theory lead to nursing actions that make important differences in the client/family health status? Think about the theory in relation to the nursing process and describe how it can be used to guide the process. 15
2. Significance to nursing practice Describe how you would use the theory in practice (research, education, or clinically). 15
3. Presence in current research Can the theories be used to guide practice or to generate a body of knowledge? Discuss one research article that used this theory to guide the research/practice. Describe the study purpose, methods, and results briefly. Comment on the usefulness of the theory as a guide for the study. 15
