Question 1 (20 marks)

The presence of harmful insects in farm fields is detected by erecting boards covered with a
sticky material and then examining the insects trapped on the boards. To investigate which
colours are most attractive to cereal leaf beetles, researchers placed six boards of each four
colours in a field of oats in July. The table below gives data on the number of cereal leaf
beetles trapped:

Colour   Insects trapped

Yellow     45 59 48 46 38 47

White      21 12 14 17 13 17

Green      37 32 15 25 39 41

Blue     16 11 20 21 14 7

(a)  Formulate the null and alternate hypotheses in words.
(4 marks)

(b)  Recommend a suitable statistical test and explain why.
(4 marks)

(c)  Analyse the data by running a suitable test in SPSS/PSPP. Show your outputs.
(3 marks)

(d)  Interpret the statistical results and report them in APA format. Include effect size and
Post-hoc tests (if any) in your report. Remember to state your conclusion.

The following table lists the monthly sales and advertising expenditures for all of last year by
a digital electronics company. The company wants to know whether the amount of sales
could be predicted by the amount spent on advertising.

Month     Sales (in 1000s)    Advertising Dollars (in 1000s)

January   100     5.5
February   110     5.8
March    112    6
April    115    5.9

September   121     6.4
October   120     6.5
November   117     6.7
December   123     6.8

(a)  Formulate the null and alternate hypotheses in words.
(4 marks)

(b)  Recommend a suitable statistical test and explain why.
(5 marks)

(c)  Analyse the data by using SPSS/PSPP to run a suitable test. Show your outputs.
(4 marks)

(d)  Interpret the above SPSS/PSPP results and report the relevant inferential statistics in
APA format at confidence level of a = .05. Discuss whether the model is a good
prediction of sales.
(7 marks)

(e) Derive the regression equation from the SPSS/PSPP output and explain how you
arrive at the equation. Apply the equation to calculate how much the company would
have to spend on advertising if it wants to hit the sales target of 130?

Question 4 (35 marks)

(a)  Supposed you are interested in investigating if people show a bias towards attractive
individuals. 50 participants come into the lab and completed a simple questionnaire.
Once they are done, they are instructed to submit their questionnaire to either one of
the two experimenters, one who is above average looking and one who is average in
attractiveness. Below is the data indicating the number of participants who submitted
the questionnaire to each of the two experimenters:

Average looking  Above average looking
12    38

(i)  Formulate the null and alternate hypotheses in words.
(4 marks)

(ii)  Recommend a suitable statistical test and explain why.
(5 marks)

(iii)  Should your hypothesis be rejected at a = .05? Analyse the data and show
your calculation workings clearly. Report your findings in APA format and
remember to state your conclusion.

(b)  A survey on the severity of rodent problems in commercial poultry houses studied a
random sample of poultry operations. Each operation was classified by type of egg
(chicken or turkey production) and by the extent of the rodent problems. Here are the
results:

Chicken   Turkey
Mild      34    22
Moderate    33    22
Severe     7    4
