Media and Society

• What is the relationship between the media example you chose and larger structures of power in society? Structures of power you could explore are Patriarchy, White Supremacy, Economic Class, Labor Exploitation, Imperialism. Which readings from Weeks 1-8 support your analysis of these power structures?
• What are the ways in which gender, sexuality, race, and class are represented in your media example? Which readings from Weeks 1-8 support this analysis?
• Using your topic as a lens, how are representations of gender, sexuality, race, and class being used to either support or subvert existing structures of power? Is this media an example of reinforcing oppression, or can you make an argument that this media provides a vision of liberation? Which readings from Weeks 1-8 support this analysis?
• Why does this media example matter, to you and to the rest of us? Why should we care about its representations of gender, sexuality, race, and class?
Your paper should specifically make reference to 5 of the readings from weeks 1-8. You should also find at least 2 outside sources of academic research or an article from a reputable news source (i.e. not Gawker, Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, etc.)
Your paper should be written using Times Roman 12-point font, double spaced, and following all rules of good writing mechanics. All readings should be properly cited in MLA format and your paper should include a Bibliography or list of Works Cited.
Citation: Whenever you use somebody’s ideas and word, you must give them credit with a citation, and quotation marks if you are using their exact words. Paraphrasing a source also necessitates the use of a citation.
