literacy
This major paper is your chance to pursue a question of interest that’s arisen out of our readings about literacy (and some initial observations at your service site). You will write a formal 5-7 pg double-spaced research paper in which you will make an argument about literacy learning in conversation with Brandt and/or Lareau. The topic you investigated for SA 1.2 (technology, gender, culture) was intended to give you some direction for this assignment but you can change course if you choose. However, this will mean finding another, relevant scholarly source.

Your research might go in one of the following directions:

Investigating literacy learning for a particular group or community
Researching a specific type of literacy and its role in society
Investigating a program designed to promote literacy
Researching policies in America or abroad related to literacy learning.
As you will notice, this assignment is open-ended. The more you limit the scope of your argument, the more effective your paper will be. Your organization and minor claims should develop out of your complex argument. At the least, this paper should use quotations from three different sources, ( through the UW library data base), as well as Brandt or Lareau. You can use the source you reviewed for SA 1.2 as a scholarly source even though a few of those wouldn’t “technically” count (we’ll talk about why).

You should internally cite all of your sources and provide a Works Cited page in MLA form.

Remember to do the following:

Make major/minor claims: Develop a larger argument about literacy learning and consider the smaller arguments that will help you get there.
Provide context: What would an outside reader need to know to understand your argument? Define key terms, provide background on authors, etc.
Summarize texts: To provide reader with a general understanding of an author’s argument and how it relates to your own points
Synthesize texts: To emphasize the relationship between various authors and how your argument fits into the conversation
Address Counter-arguments
Use quotations: To back up your claims about an author’s argument
Provide stakes: Tell me why your argument matters!
