Language Variation

Language Variation

Several of the readings in part 6 of the Lan’guage reader deal with variations in speech among people of different regions and social groups. Compile a list of slang and idiomatic phrases from the students in your class. Your list may include some of the following: ways of indicating refusal (“no way Jose”) or desirability (“Niiiice!!!”); forms of address (“Whatup”); and expressions of difference (“is that cool?”) or disapproval (“That’s Wack”). Some expressions rely on phonology, word order, or semantic extension. Record the meanings given by the user of the phrase or word.
Using the list you compile, conduct a survey in your community or among your family. Before asking survey questions record the age, education level, sex, and place of birth. Then ask your participants whether they have heard, use, and know the expressions on the list. Take notes on whether their meaning matches the meaning given. After gathering your data, use the essays read in class in conjunction with your data to write an essay that builds on the data from your survey. What does the survey suggest about language variation?
