King and the Politics of the Civil Rights Movement

Read Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. From what you have learned of the Civil Rights movement, who were the possible audiences of King’s speech? How was King both positioning himself as a leader of the movement through the speech, and how was he warning the American people of the perils of not listening to his message? More importantly, do you agree with King’s advocacy of non-violent protest as the route to effecting social change, or do you think that the more strident and threatening message of Malcolm X was just as responsible for the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts?
