You have read and studied a variety of texts focussing on the way Australia and Australians are represented, including David Malouf?s Johnno which is particularly concerned with life in Brisbane.

Write a response which intervenes in the narrative from the point of view of a character in Johnno. Your response should explore a gap or silence in the text and reveal your understanding of the character. It should also articulate the ideas, attitudes and values of your chosen character towards the issues which are prevalent at the point of intervention in the text. On the cover sheet of your assignment indicate whose point of view you are expressing and at which point in the novel your narrative occurs.

Mrs Laumans: As Johnno begins to mature his adolescence he wants to not only discover who he is, but also to share who he believes himself to be with another. He is disappointed that Dante has not shown an interest in developing a better understanding to him and having a more meaningful friendship
? What does your character value in relation to this topic?
Mrs Laumans: Johnno values the idea of living beyond what is offered to him at home and at school. He seeks intellectual stimulation ? he is a thinker. Johnno believes he has identified this trait in Dante, hence why he has chosen to try to develop a more significant friendship with him.

My intention through the narrative is to reveal what it is like at home for Johnno and how Dante offends Johnno. Johnno feels as if Dante only knows him as someone with a bad reputation and the class clown

I will be looking at Johnno?s attitudes to Dante still believing Johnno is the samedisappointed that Dante doesn?t seem to want to get to know him on any other level than what he already is. Johnno is very curious and hopes that being away from other boys and not having to living up to the ?class clown? expectation he and Dante will be able to develop a better friendship.

My intervention will take place when Johnno invites Dante over to his house for the first time. I am writing from the perspective of Johnno.
