International Relations
o You are required to address the following required questions in narrative and essay format and to analyze the relationship of the current event to the course topic that it correlates to within the chapter of the text you have selected for your study. Remember, your cover page and list of references do not count as part of your word count.
o DO NOT answer the questions individually. Rather, provide analysis in essay format and address all required questions as they are interconnected and should be approached accordingly. DO NOT include the questions in your narrative.
Required Essay Questions:
o what specific topic is under discussion ? (note–you are required to formally introduce your article by name and author within the text)
o why did you select the article ?
o why did you select the topic ?
o how does it specifically relate to our class ? the selected chapter ?
o what is your reaction to the topic ?
o what is your position on the topic ? do you agree ? disagree ? why ?
o be sure to provide specific and detailed and direct points of comparison and connection between the article and our class topic using the text of the article and our assigned textbook to support your points of focus
o Be sure that your analysis is central. Direct quotes should support but not replace your analysis. As a rule, no more than 20% total of your text should ever be direct quotes. It is your analysis and interpretation in your own words that demonstrates your quality of understanding of this or any topic
o Be sure to use clear and concise sentences
o Be sure to use appropriate tone for the content of the assignment
o Be sure to clearly state major points and support your points with specific details, examples and analysis
o Be sure to organize your analysis logically
o Be sure that your analysis is accurate, factual, comprehensive and persuasive
Article Selection:
Select one electronic article no more than 30 days old at the time of submission from a vetted source (a newspaper, newsmagazine or website that focuses on current news based events ) that directly relates to the topics that are included in one of the chapters required for each assignment. Note that the drop box will open one week prior to the assignment deadline.

• The event must be a news based current event (i.e. a natural disaster, economic crisis, social development, act of violence, leadership, etc)
• The key is that you select a current event that is somehow related to the course materials in specific terms—the focus of the article should parallel the topics in the chapter selected for discussion
• The article must be from a vetted source
• Note that you MAY NOT use any travel based sites, book reviews, blogs, historical or archaeological based articles, updates on prior events, textbooks, video or audio presentations, or any articles that are not news oriented or current event oriented that are not news oriented or current event oriented
Organization:
o Be sure to include the following required elements:
o a cover page
o an introduction
? that is required to:
• 1. Introduce your topic
• 2. State your thesis statement
• 3. Entice the reader to continue to read
o Transitions
o a conclusion
Citations/References:
o Be sure to include the following required elements:
o in text citations (following either APA or MLA Guidelines)
o a full list of references (must be complete and follow either APA or MLA Guidelines—remember a web address is not a complete reference).

o When complete, take care to attach a copy of the article link as part of the proper citation that is required as part of the list of references (take care that the date is on the article) to your analysis and to submit both the article and the analysis together as a single submission.
? DO NOT attach the entire article, just the link for the article as part of the citation in the list of references
o You may not use any sources other than the article and your assigned textbook as a source to complete this analysis. DO NOT summarize your text.
Mechanics:
o Word Count: 750 words minimum and 1500 words maximum
o When submitted your work is required to be:
o Typed
o double spaced (do not double space between paragraphs)
o have standard margins
o is required to be in Times New Roman 12 point plain text
o When submitted ensure that your work is error free (spelling, grammar, and syntax) and is properly formatted overall
o When submitted your paper must be one continuous document—note that you can only submit one document for each assignment due and that you cannot submit multiple times—all required elements must be submitted as part of your single submission
o Note that your submission must either be posted by copying your text in the window provided or as an attachment (only MS Word or RTF files may be submitted) No other file formats are permitted

Submission of Work:
o When you save your document on your computer or submit to the required assignment area do not include any characters (like #) in your saved title
