Length: 1600 words
The task Imagine you are the Deputy Head of School (DHoS) for the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at a university. The DHoS is the person who receives all serious complaints from students. She/He is required to investigate all complaints, establish what caused the problem, and make recommendations about how to remedy the problem, and how to avoid it in future. The investigation and recommendations get written up in a report that is to be submitted to the Head of School.
As DHoS you have received a complaint from a first year student about another first year student’s behaviour, claiming that he/she was offensive about another student’s culture. This can be either in a tutorial, or in online discussions. You must invent the scenario where this behavior takes place. You must produce a report for the Head of School advising him or her of the following:
1. Briefly summarise the event
2. Explain the nature of the offense using the concepts of prejudice, stereotyping and/or discrimination (you must use at least one, you can use all three).
3. Explain why you think the student may have acted that way, and why you think the complaining student felt offended.
4. Explain what steps should be taken to remedy the offense.
5. Explain what recommendations you will make for a) Lecturers and tutors, and b) students to avoid this behaviour in future The Head of School can then use this report to respond to the students, and to help Lecturers and Tutors manage difficult situations like this in future.
You must also draw on research in the following two ways: 1) Use some resources to help you define and explain the three key terms (prejudice, stereotyping, discrimination)
2) Use some resources to find suggestions for how to respond to prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination. You must reference all sources you use using Harvard referencing. You should have at least 7 references, at least half of which should be academic sources (books, book chapters or journal articles). The others should be from credible sources (e.g. the Australian Psychological Society, or government websites that promote anti-racism initiatives).
