A literature review is a paper that summarizes information about a specific topic. Literature reviews are Secondary
Sources, meaning that they do not report any new or original experimental work. Most literature reviews are
published in scientific journals and are peer reviewed, while some literature reviews can be found in magazines such
as Discover Magazine, Scientific American, and New Scientist. For this assignment, you will write a literature review
article that will inform the reader of a physiological disorder.
The purpose of this assignment is to enhance your ability to: (1) search and locate primary literature; (2) absorb
information found in the literature; (3) synthesize your knowledge into a written article; (4) use critical thinking to
determine if there are gaps in the literature that need more research; and (5) disseminate information about this topic
to a general audience through your article.
Assignment Description:
For this assignment, you are asked to write a literature review article on a physiological disorder randomly assigned
to you by your TA. You must find at least 5 primary sources and 1 published literature review (a secondary source
found in journals) on your topic and write a 2-3 page literature review article (not including Literature Cited) on the
topic you’ve been assigned.
Topics to include in your article and the breakdown of points are as follows:
a. Disorder description = 4 pts
b. Causes and risk factors of the disorder = 3 pts
c. Prevention and/or treatment of disorder = 3 pts
d. Areas (of this topic) where you think need more research needs to be done = 3 pts
e. Literature Cited = 4 pts
f. Quality and flow of writing, correct grammar and punctuation = 3 pts
Guidelines:
a. Typed, Double Spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font, 1” margins.
1. The text of your review article should be 2-3 pages long (3-4 pgs including Lit Cited)
2. The Literature Cited section needs a header.
3. Because this is an article for a magazine you do not need an abstract nor will you include figures.
b. You must have citations. Plagiarism is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
1. Must have at least 5 primary sources and 1 secondary source (literature review from a
scientific journal). No websites or textbooks.
2. Include parenthetical citations for ALL information that is not your work.
3. Include a Literature Cited page with all sources used in your report.
4. Use the Literature Cited and in-text citation format provided below.

c. You are writing a cohesive article.
1. Make sure your information flows together with correct grammar and punctuation.
2. Be sure to explain the physiology of the disorder in a clear manner.
3. You should write your article in a way that a non-biologist could understand the content.
