How to Use Fitness Equipment
This exercise will require you to provide illustrations and graphics in some form. If you have access to a digital camera, the task is fairly easy. Otherwise you may use line drawings or any other form of illustration available. Go to your local gym or the fitness center on your campus. Select a piece of fitness equipment and write a set of instructions for a first-time user on how to use the equipment you selected. Consider the following tips very carefully.
Correct technical level:?If terms may be confusing to the novice, be sure to define them appropriately.
Provide introductory information:?Introductory information should include how to dress and the equipment needed to work out, as well as the purpose for working out and the possible benefits if the regimen is followed regularly.
Liability:?Remember to provide all cautions, warnings, and danger in the appropriate sections of your instructions. Some novices may be “weekend warriors” and prone to overdoing exercise the first time. You may want to suggest a number of repetitions and starting weight range (if this applies) for both men and women. For fitness equipment that is computerized, you will need to provide a simple set of programming instructions.
Format:?A simple format is crucial to the body of the instructions. Make a list of steps that must be followed and group them under the appropriate task headings. “Chunk” your information so that a novice user can easily follow each step. It is best to place one action in each step to avoid confusing the reader. You may use any format you wish; consider using all design features that will enhance your instructions.??Design options:?Bold?Underlining?Full caps?Italics?Color?Oversized print?Boxing?White space
Cautions, warnings, and danger:?Your most important obligation is to highlight cautions, warnings, and danger where appropriate. Consider using some uniform replication each time you provide any cautions, warnings, or danger. (For example: warnings may be presented in red with capital lettering.) If for any reason you believe the audience may be unfamiliar with the definitions for cautions, warnings, and danger, you may provide definitions in your instructions, preferably near the beginning. For our purposes the terms are defined below.??Cautions: possibility of damage to equipment or materials?Warnings: possibility of injury to people?Danger: probability of injury or death to people
Graphics:?Insert graphics in the text when appropriate. When formatting, try to keep the text and the graphics as close together as possible. Sometimes you may need to use white space to your advantage and begin a new page in order to keep the text and graphics together. Use your “design” sense!
Final considerations:?Some fitness equipment will have a sketchy set of instructions printed on the machine. Use these as a starting place, but remember they are by no means enough for a novice user. Lastly, consider testing your instructions on a friend or classmate. Someone who is unfamiliar with the process completes the best test.
