How the various plant and animal species have been able to survive, adapt and often thrive in specific environments.

Up to this point, we have been focusing heavily on the atmosphere. Now it?s time to apply what you have learned
about weather and climate to understand how living things are uniquely adapted to their environments. Temperature
and precipitation largely determine which plants will grow in a specific location, which in turn impacts which
animals will inhabit those same locations.

This week we move into concepts related to the biosphere. I’m very excited about this week’s discussion on
biodiversity and influences on natural distributions! We?ll be talking about how the various plant and animal
species have been able to survive, adapt and often thrive in specific environments.

Identify and discuss a specific example of an environmental adaptation of a species. How terrestrial fauna (fancy
wording for “animals”) adapt to their environment is explained in Chapter 11 on pages 324-328 of the 9th edition
and 293-300 in the 10th edition/2nd California edition. You may wish to discuss how a particular species is
physiologically, behaviorally or reproductively adapted to a specific environment.
