History

You will write and submit a short essay (5-6 pages) in which you will compare and analyze four
different sources that speak to Aboriginal people’s relationship to the War of 1812. Three of these
four sources will be assigned to you. They are:
• the “Tecumseh” chapter from the comic book Canada 1812: Forged in Fire, available through
the course website;
• Sean Carleton’s public history essay, “Rebranding Canada with Comics: Canada 1812: Forged
in Fire and the Continuing Co-optation of Tecumseh,” Active History, available online at
http://activehistory.ca/papers/history-papers-15/.
• and the relevant sections from your textbook, Journeys.
In addition to these three sources, you are responsible for researching the fourth source required for
this assignment. This source must be an academic piece of historical writing (a peer-reviewed
academic journal article or a monograph published by a university press), and it must be relevant to
the topic. We will talk about how to search for, and identify, academic sources in class. Overall, this
essay asks you to apply and build upon the skills developed in this course, put four different types of
historical writing in conversation with each other, learn more about the War of 1812, and explore
