Healthcare Outcomes

Assignment 5: The objective of this assignment is for you to apply the learning in these 4 course sections, and integrate how you can use the knowledge you have gained to plan a “bouquet” of study outcomes that complement each other and that satisfy a number of different stake holders. To do this:

1. Select a topic (a condition or a disease/event) for which you will plan a study to improve outcomes. Think about the desired outcomes in a comprehensive manner. Write a brief paragraph that describes the problem.

2. State the research question in ONE sentence, and give the rationale for its importance in a brief paragraph (1-2 lines).

3. Search the literature to find papers that can be used to support your choice of three (3) measures of outcomes for your hypothetical study. Of the 3 measures:

a. One must be a traditional clinical outcome measure
b. One should be a measure that payers or policy makers can strongly relate to
c. And one must be a patient-centered outcome measure

4. Write a brief paragraph on each measure, including the reason why you think this is a good one.
5. As usual, give me a paragraph that tells me what you learned from the assignment.

Example of how to start this assignment:
Problem: Many adult patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) have frequent pain crises and often use a hospital ER when in crisis. Regular blood transfusions and the use of hydoxyurea can decrease the risk of pain crises. However, primary care practitioners are not experienced in managing these interventions.

Question: Will the use of lay patient navigators for adult SCD patients improve outcomes?
