1. Begin the essay by a short introduction to the topic and a summary of the arguments/conclusions that you will make in answering the question.
2. Use headings and subheadings to structure and organise the essay logically and to provide signposts to the reader as to where the essay is going.
3. Devote approximately 1,000 words (half the essay) to detailing the major arguments that Dixon et al. (2012) make to present their case regarding the limits to orthodox and traditional understandings of prejudice (include the short introduction in this count).
4. To build their argument Dixon et al. cover several different areas of social psychological research including: ambivalent sexism, dehumanization/ infrahumanization, intergroup helping, common identification, prejudice reduction, and intergroup contact. Their article therefore covers a lot of ground which will be difficult for you to integrate fully in a 2,000 word essay. To do the essay question justice, choose 2 to 3 of these areas of research to demonstrate your understanding of their thesis.
5. Devote 1,000 words evaluating the authors’ arguments. You may agree/ disagree, or sit somewhere in between. Whatever you do, argue your case clearly and draw on existing research and scholarly opinion to support your views. Of course you may draw inspiration and insight from the 27 peer commentaries that accompany the target article but please acknowledge this by citing the author(s) when appropriate.
6. Finish the essay with a short conclusion that also draws out the implications for our understandings of prejudice.
7. Please make sure to list all references cited in the essay using the APA referencing style.
