GMFC Management or a union role
Taking either a Management or a union role, formulate arguments for or against (1) industrywide bargaining with each separate union, (2) industry wide bargaining with coalition bargaining representing employees, (3) bargaining at the local level on all issues with the union that happens to represent the employee.
Case: Material Handling Equipment Association Bargaining Group
GMB is a charter member of the Material Equipment Handling Association (MHEA). The orqanization was started in the 1940’s and now includes 30 membersproducing over95 % of all domestic material handling equipment. Presently, these manufacturers prduce 70% of the material handling equipment sold in the United States. About 80%of the association’s total production is for the domestic market. Primary foreign markets are in Europe and Latin America with increasingmarketingemphasisin Eastern Europe.
AB members are unionized, to some extent, with the proportions of productionjobs organizedranging from 25-100%. GMFCis 80% unionized. Most companies bargain with the Steelworkers, theAuto Workers, or theMachinists. Some variations exit betweencontractswithin employers andacrossemployersin the association.
The MHEA industrial relation executives recently studied the possibility of industrywide bargaining. Coincidentally, since theywereproposing a merger, the major unions representing MHEA employees explored potential coalition bargaining arrangements.
